"Better Lighting for Patients Suffering from Glaucoma”
Patients with limited vision need a comfortable light to read, write, work, even making out facial expressions of loved ones; as there are many eye ailments that rob low vision patients of being able to live comfortably. Glaucoma for instance, is one of the most debilitating eye diseases where “experts estimate that half of the people affected by glaucoma may not know they have it,” according to the Glaucoma Research Foundation. “Glaucoma is also the second leading cause of blindness. Sometimes called the silent thief of sight, glaucoma can damage your vision so gradually you don't notice any loss of vision until the disease is at an advanced stage.” Mayo Clinic. To better understand this disease, glaucoma refers to a group of eye diseases that damage to the optic nerve; the nerve that carries visual information from the eye to the brain, and gradually steals sight without warning.
According to Mayo Clinic, “The most common types of glaucoma — primary open-angle glaucoma and acute angle-closure glaucoma — have completely different symptoms.” Such symptoms include the following:
- Primary open-angle glaucoma signs and symptoms include:
- Gradual loss of peripheral vision, usually in both eyes
- Tunnel vision in the advanced stages
Acute angle-closure glaucoma signs and symptoms include:
- Severe eye pain
- Nausea and vomiting (accompanying the severe eye pain)
- Sudden onset of visual disturbance, often in low light
- Blurred vision
- Halos around lights
- Reddening of the eye
